Bokashi

WHAT IS BOKASHI?

Open tab

Bokashi, or fermented composting, is a process that converts food waste and organic matter into a soil amendment which improves texture and adds nutrients to soil.

HOW IS BAKASHI DIFFERENT FROM COMPOSTING?

Open tab

The organic material is fermented by bacteria as oppose to being decomposed.

The fermented material is applied directly to field or garden without requiring further time to mature.

Bokashi captures all the carbon, energy and nutrients and prevents emission of greenhouse gases and heat.

HOW CAN I MAKE MY OWN BOKASHI?

Open tab

If the substrate does not contain a significant amount of carbohydrate, add molasses, rice or sugar to feed the bacteria.

Please separate material from the substrate that is rotten or show green or black mould as putrefying bacteria can overwhelm the fermentation.

Store in an airtight container for up to 30 days or when it starts to emit a unpleasant smell.
